Although Indigo has only been around since 1996, it’s grown from a simple bookstore in Burlington, Ont. into one of the biggest retail chains in Canada today. Indigo Books & Music, Inc. was founded by Heather Reisman originally as a music and bookstore. However, the company has grown very quickly and it now also sells a wide variety of magazines, CDs, DVDs, gifts, iPods, and toys. Indigo was also the first book retail chain to add licensed cafes to some of its outlets to make shopping a social event and a leisurely experience.

In 2001 Indigo joined forces with Chapters Inc. to become Canada’s largest books retail chain, which is also known throughout the country as Chapters-Indigo. Indigo’s head office is located in Toronto and the company has about 6,000 employees. Other well known Canadian bookstores such as Coles, SmithBooks, and The Book Company are also under the Indigo umbrella. The company has also recently formed alliances with Apple and iUniverse and makes its own brand of products, called IndigoLife.

You can also enjoy live entertainment at many Indigo stores as some outlets offer their shoppers various types of of in-store events such as book readings, cooking demonstrations, book club meetings, and storytime and information sessions. Some of the more notable guests have included authors and artists such as Rudolph Giuliani, Lou Gerstner,Oscar Peterson, Jann Arden and Jamie Oliver.

For those of you who can’t make it to the closest Indigo store, you can still enjoy the savings on the company’s products by shopping online. The company offers its shoppers a rewards program for even more savings and also sells gift certificates. Indigo also supports the growth of Canada's e-commerce industry by operating one of the Internet's leading affiliate programs for other website owners.
