An authorized user—sometimes called an additional cardholder—gets a card linked to the primary cardholder’s account, can make purchases, and leaves the primary responsible for the balance. That convenience helps couples, caregivers, and some parents, but it is not joint credit, and it usually does not build credit history for the person you add. Here is how authorized users work, what the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) says about responsibility, and when an extra card fits.

Authorized user versus joint borrower

Under FCAC’s joint credit card guidance, you are the primary cardholder if you apply and your name is on the agreement. You must be the age of majority in your province or territory. As primary, you may add or remove additional cardholders and authorized users, and you remain responsible for paying the balance.

An authorized user receives a card linked to your account and can make purchases much like you can. Those purchases appear on your statement, and you pay them. The authorized user is not responsible for money owing on the account. That is the core difference from a co-borrower or co-applicant: joint borrowers are equally responsible for the balance. If someone needs equal legal responsibility for the debt, authorized user status is the wrong tool.

Some issuers allow an authorized user under the age of majority. FCAC says to contact the issuer to confirm whether a younger family member can be added. Rules vary, so do not assume a teen card is automatic.

Who pays, and what shows on the statement

When an authorized user swipes, taps, or shops online, the charge rolls into the same account you already manage. You see the activity on the monthly statement—and often sooner in the issuer’s app. Rewards, if any, generally accrue to the primary account under that card’s rules, not as a separate earn stream for the additional cardholder.

Because you alone repay, set expectations before you order the card. Agree on what it is for (groceries, gas, school supplies), what is off-limits, and how you will review spending together. Real-time alerts and spending limits in the issuer’s app, where available, catch surprises early. If trust is shaky, pause—an authorized user card is easy to add and often easy to remove, but unpaid balances still belong to you.

Credit history: what an authorized user typically does not get

FCAC is clear that purchases an additional cardholder makes generally will not help them build credit history. The account belongs to the primary cardholder. If your goal is to help a partner or adult child establish a credit file, an authorized user card alone is usually a weak path. Building history typically means a product reported in their name—such as a secured card, a student card they qualify for on their own, or becoming a joint borrower where that product exists and both parties understand the shared risk.

Authorized user status can still be practical for access and rewards consolidation even when it does not help the extra cardholder’s file. Separate “convenient spending” from “credit-building” in your plan.

Fees: an example from a cash-back Visa Infinite

Issuers price additional cards differently. Some waive the fee; others charge for the first supplementary card. On the TD Cash Back Visa Infinite, the primary annual fee is $139, with $50 for the first Additional Cardholder and $0 for subsequent Additional Cardholders. Confirm live disclosures before you apply or add someone—fees and offers change.

If household spending will move onto one rewards card, the extra cardholder fee can be worthwhile when you already repay in full and want shared earn. If nobody else will use the card, skip the add-on. Compare the current rebate and product notes on the Great Canadian Rebates TD Cash Back Visa Infinite details page so you match a real offer to your repayment habit.

When an authorized user makes sense

An authorized user setup fits when you want one statement for household cash flow and already pay on time; when a partner or caregiver needs purchase access without becoming a co-borrower; when you are consolidating spend onto a card whose rewards you redeem; and when you can remove the card quickly if spending drifts.

Pause when you need the other person to build their own credit file, when you cannot afford a larger combined balance if spending rises, when you want equal legal responsibility for the debt, or when the other person is not ready for shared access.

Before you add anyone, read your cardholder agreement for age rules, fees, how to remove a cardholder, and how authorized-user activity affects utilization. Utilization still sits on the primary account: their spending and yours share the same limit.

Practical steps before you add a card

Confirm age and eligibility with your issuer. Review the additional-cardholder fee on the live product page. Decide spending categories and a personal monthly cap below the credit limit. Turn on alerts where the issuer allows it. Agree how you will pay the statement in full by the due date.

If the arrangement stops working, remove the authorized user through the issuer and destroy the physical card. Closing access does not erase charges already posted—you still owe what was spent.

Choosing the right sharing setup pairs well with stretching everyday purchases through rebates. Explore current offers on Great Canadian Rebates, then keep any authorized user card aligned with spending you can repay in full most months.

Adding a credit card authorized user is one of the simplest ways to share everyday spending in Canada without opening a second account.
