That extra cost usually comes from credit card foreign transaction fees. This guide explains how credit card foreign transaction fees work in Canada, where they show up, and how to keep more of your money when you travel or shop abroad.

What Is a Foreign Transaction Fee?

When you pay in a currency other than Canadian dollars, your card issuer has to convert the amount. It then applies two things: an exchange rate for the purchase and a foreign currency conversion charge.

That second part is the foreign transaction fee. Your disclosure statement may call it a “foreign currency conversion” charge, but it’s the same idea. It is a percentage added on top of the converted amount.

Many Canadian cards charge 2.5%. Scotiabank, for example, describes 2.5% as the mark-up typically charged by credit card issuers on top of the exchange rate. Check your own card’s disclosure statement for the exact rate.

How the Fee Is Calculated

The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) walks through a simple example in its guide to how credit cards work:

You buy something for €1,000.

The exchange rate is 1.45, so the purchase converts to $1,450.

A 2.5% conversion charge adds $36.25.

Your total is $1,486.25 in Canadian dollars.

In other words, you pay an extra $36.25 just for the currency. Over a week-long trip, those small charges can add up fast.

FCAC also notes that issuers convert in different ways. Some convert directly into Canadian dollars. Others convert to U.S. dollars first and then to Canadian dollars. Either way, the charge applies after the purchase is in Canadian dollars.

Where Credit Card Foreign Transaction Fees Show Up

You don’t have to leave the country to pay this fee. It can apply whenever a transaction is in a foreign currency. Common examples include:

Hotels, restaurants, and shops while you travel.

Online stores that bill in U.S. dollars or euros.

Subscriptions, apps, and digital services priced in a foreign currency.

Car rentals and tours booked through foreign websites.

If a website shows prices in another currency, assume the conversion charge applies unless your card says otherwise. Then check your statement to see how the purchase was billed.

Watch Out for Dynamic Currency Conversion

Sometimes a payment terminal or website abroad offers to charge you in Canadian dollars instead of the local currency. This is called dynamic currency conversion, or DCC.

It sounds convenient. However, the merchant or its payment provider sets the exchange rate, not your card issuer. That rate is often less favourable, so the purchase can end up costing you more.

When you’re given the choice, pay in the local currency. That way, your card’s own exchange rate and terms apply, and you know what to expect.

Cash Advances Abroad Cost Even More

Using your credit card at a foreign ATM is one of the most expensive ways to get cash. According to FCAC, the fee for a cash advance outside Canada is typically higher than it is at home. A foreign currency conversion charge may also apply.

On top of that, cash advances have no interest-free grace period. You pay interest from the day you take out the money until you pay it back in full. So if you need cash while travelling, compare other options first.

Refunds Can Come Back Different

Returns can be tricky too. If you return something you bought in a foreign currency, the refund may not match what you paid. Exchange rates change daily, so the rate on your refund date may be different.

How to Avoid Credit Card Foreign Transaction Fees

If you travel or shop in other currencies often, a few simple habits can save you money:

Use a card that doesn’t charge a foreign currency conversion fee.

Pay in the local currency, not Canadian dollars, when asked.

Avoid credit card cash advances abroad.

Check your statements and report any errors quickly.

Pay your balance in full to avoid interest.

The Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite+ Card is one example of a card without the usual markup. Scotiabank says it won’t charge foreign transaction fees on foreign currency purchases, so just the exchange rate applies. The card has a $150 annual fee, which may be rebated with an eligible Scotiabank chequing account. Conditions apply.

Be honest about your habits, though. Skipping a 2.5% charge saves $25 for every $1,000 you spend in foreign currencies. At that rate, you would need about $6,000 a year in foreign spending for the savings alone to match a $150 fee. Scotiabank itself says the card may not suit you if you rarely travel or make foreign currency purchases.

Earn Cash Back on a No-Fee Travel Card

If the Passport Visa Infinite+ fits the way you travel, Great Canadian Rebates currently lists a $125 cash back rebate on the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite+ Card for approved applications started through its link. Read the rebate conditions on that page before you apply, along with the card’s income requirements.

The Bottom Line

Credit card foreign transaction fees are easy to miss because they’re built into the converted price. Know your card’s conversion charge, pay in the local currency, and skip cash advances abroad. If you often spend in other currencies, a card with no foreign transaction fees can pay for itself.

Ready to find a card that fits your travel plans? Before you apply, visit Great Canadian Rebates to see if you can earn cash back on it. That way, your next card starts paying you back from day one.

Paying with your card outside Canada, or on a website that bills in U.S. dollars, often costs a little more than the price you see.
