But “simple” doesn’t mean every card pays the same, or that cash back is always free money. Here’s how these cards actually work, so you can pick one that fits the way you spend.

How cash back credit cards earn money for you

Every time you make an eligible purchase, the card issuer sets aside a percentage of that amount as a reward. A card that pays 2% on groceries gives you $2 back on a $100 grocery run. A card that pays 0.5% on everything else gives you 50 cents on a $100 purchase in another category.

Where does that money come from? Mostly from the interchange fees merchants pay each time you tap or swipe. The issuer shares a slice of that fee with you to win your business. If you carry a balance, though, interest charges flow the other way, and they can wipe out your rewards quickly.

Flat-rate vs. category cash back credit cards

Most cash back cards fall into two groups.

Flat-rate cards pay the same percentage on almost everything. They’re easy to use because you never have to think about which card to pull out.

Category cards pay a higher rate in certain spending categories, such as groceries, gas, restaurants, or recurring bills, and a lower base rate on the rest.

Category cards usually earn more if most of your spending lands in their bonus categories. Flat-rate cards can win if your spending is spread out. Before you choose, look at two or three months of statements and see where your money really goes.

Caps, limits, and the fine print

Many cards cap their higher rates. A card might pay its top rate only up to a certain amount of spending per year, then drop to the base rate. Others pay unlimited cash back in their categories. A cap matters if you spend heavily in one area.

Also check how a purchase is classified. The category is set by the merchant’s code, not by what you bought. Groceries bought at a big-box store may not count as “grocery” spending, and a gas station convenience purchase may or may not count as gas. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada suggests comparing rewards, fees, and interest rates side by side in its guide to choosing a credit card.

How and when you get paid

Payout rules vary more than people expect. Some cards credit your cash back monthly. Others pay once a year, often on a set statement, which means you could lose unpaid rewards if you close the card early. Some let you redeem whenever you reach a minimum, like $25. Read the redemption terms before you apply, not after.

Cash back usually shows up as a statement credit, a deposit to a bank account, or both. A statement credit lowers your balance, but it doesn’t count as your minimum payment, so keep paying on time.

Annual fees and cash back credit cards

No-fee cash back cards are a solid default. Premium cards with an annual fee often pay higher rates and add perks like insurance, but they only make sense if the extra cash back is bigger than the fee. A quick test: multiply your yearly spending in each category by the card’s rate, add it up, and subtract the fee. Then do the same for a no-fee card and compare.

An example: Tangerine Money-Back World Mastercard

The Tangerine Money-Back World Mastercard shows how a category card can work with no annual fee. You pick two 2% Money-Back Categories from a list of 13 options, including groceries, gas, and restaurants, and earn 0.5% on everything else. If you have your rewards deposited into a Tangerine Savings Account, you unlock a third 2% category.

Rewards are earned automatically and paid monthly, there’s no limit on how much you can earn, and you can change your categories every 90 days as your spending shifts. At the time of writing, Tangerine also lists a welcome bonus of $120 when you spend $1,500 in your first three months. Offers change, so confirm the current terms before you apply. Check the income and credit requirements too.

If you apply through Great Canadian Rebates, you can also get a $75 cash back rebate on the Tangerine Money-Back World Mastercard when you’re approved, provided you’re a new Tangerine credit card holder. Read the rebate conditions on that page first.

Habits that keep cash back credit cards worth it

Pay in full every month. With purchase rates around 20% or more, one month of interest can cancel out a year of rewards.

Match categories to real spending. Choose the bonus categories you already use, not the ones that sound appealing.

Don’t spend to earn. Buying something you didn’t need to get 2% back is still a 98% loss.

The bottom line

Cash back credit cards reward you for spending you were going to do anyway. Pick a card whose categories match your budget, understand when it pays out, weigh any annual fee honestly, and pay your balance in full. Do that, and the money you get back is genuinely yours.

Ready to earn even more? Browse credit card offers at Great Canadian Rebates and collect a cash back rebate on top of your card’s own rewards when you’re approved.

Cash back credit cards are the simplest rewards cards in Canada: you spend, a percentage comes back to you as real dollars, and there’s no points chart to decode.
