You fill out a form, wait a few seconds or a few days, and get a yes or a no. But issuers in Canada follow a fairly predictable process. Once you know what they look at, you can pick cards you’re likely to get and avoid applications that only cost you points on your credit score.

What happens during credit card approval

When you submit an application, you give the issuer permission to check your credit. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) explains that in most provinces, a business needs your consent before it can check your credit, and signing a credit application gives that consent.

The issuer then pulls your credit report from a credit bureau and compares it with the details you entered. Some applications get an instant decision. Others go to a person for review, which can take a few days. You may be asked for proof of income or identity before a final answer.

What issuers check before credit card approval

Every bank uses its own rules, but most weigh the same handful of things:

Your credit score and history. Issuers want to see on-time payments, a reasonable amount of debt, and accounts that have been open for a while.

Your income. Many cards set a minimum personal or household income. Premium cards usually set it higher.

Your existing debt. Large balances on other cards or loans can make an issuer cautious, even with a good score.

Recent applications. Several new credit checks in a short time can look like you urgently need credit.

Your relationship with the bank. Some issuers look at accounts you already hold with them.

Hard checks and soft checks

Not every credit check counts against you. According to the FCAC, a hard inquiry is a credit check that appears on your credit report and affects your credit score. Credit card applications are a common example. A soft inquiry only appears on the version of your report that you can see, and it doesn’t affect your score. Checking your own credit report is a soft inquiry.

The FCAC also notes that too many credit inquiries close together may make lenders think you’re urgently seeking credit or spending beyond your means. Its advice is simple: apply for credit only when you need it, and avoid sending several applications at once. You can read more in the FCAC’s guide to improving your credit score.

Some issuers and comparison sites offer pre-approval or pre-qualification tools. These usually rely on a soft check and can give you a sense of your odds. They are not a guarantee, though. The full application still comes with a hard check and a final decision.

A real example: Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite

Looking at one card’s requirements makes the process clearer. According to Scotiabank’s current page for the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite Card, you can apply if you have a minimum personal income of $60,000 to $80,000 or more per year, a minimum household income of $100,000 to $150,000 or more, or $250,000 to $300,000 or more in assets under management. Scotiabank says it uses your application to help identify the card that’s right for you.

The page also lists a $150 annual fee, a minimum credit limit of $5,000, a 20.99% purchase interest rate, and a 22.99% cash advance rate. Scotiabank says the application asks a few quick questions about your job, your yearly income, and where you live.

The card’s Great Canadian Rebates details page shows a welcome offer worth up to $1,250 in first-year value, including up to 35,000 bonus Scene+ points, for offers valid August 4 to November 1, 2026. It lists a credit score of 725 as a guide and a $125 cash back rebate from GCR when you’re approved through that page. People who held a Scotiabank personal credit card in the past two years aren’t eligible for the 25,000 bonus points part of the offer, so read the conditions before you apply.

How to improve your odds of credit card approval

Check your credit report first. It’s free to look, it won’t hurt your score, and you can fix errors before a lender sees them.

Match the card to your income. Read the income requirement on the issuer’s page before you apply.

Pay down balances. Lower balances on your other cards can make your profile look stronger.

Space out applications. Leave time between new credit requests instead of applying for several cards in one week.

Be accurate on the form. Report your real income and employment. Errors can slow the review or lead to a decline.

What to do if you’re declined

A decline isn’t permanent. Ask the issuer why, if the reason isn’t clear. Then check your credit report for errors and look at what you can change, such as paying down debt or waiting before your next application.

You might also start with a card that has lower requirements, such as a no-fee card. Using it well and paying the balance in full each month builds the history that premium issuers like to see.

The bottom line

Credit card approval comes down to your credit history, your income, your current debt, and how often you apply. Read the eligibility rules before you apply, keep hard checks to a minimum, and choose a card that fits where your finances are today.

Ready to compare cards? Visit Great Canadian Rebates to see current credit card offers and earn a cash back rebate on top of your card’s own rewards when you’re approved.

Credit card approval can feel like a black box.
